About the book A Life Well Lived, the Remarkable Story of Hugh S. Thompson, Governor of South Carolina

Hugh S. Thompson lived a remarkable life. He went from being a Citadel cadet, to teacher, to Citadel professor, to Confederate Captain leading Citadel cadets in battle. After the Civil War he was a schoolmaster, successful candidate for South Carolina Superintendent of Education in the contentious election of 1876; he was a strong advocate of education for all. He was twice elected Governor then appointed by President Benjamin Harrison as Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury. Then, he was appointed to the Civil Service Commission where he became friends with Theodore Roosevelt. He ended his full life as Comptroller of New York Life Insurance Company.
